I win! That is, I would win any contest for having the two children who are most unalike! He is Napoleon, Jr. She is Miss Mellow. Now you understand my crazed appearance! But we have found common ground for teaching these two: great literature! …They even “live out” the story together, for while the book is being read, they are “building” the story-world with their historical mini-figures, toy furniture, wooden blocks, etc.

He is building elaborate palisades and dungeons with Kapla pieces, Safari Toobs, and Lego/Playmobil bits. She is putting together the palace kitchens, the nursery, and the stables where the beloved animals (the ones in the story she is hearing) bed down in soft hay. As the story is flowing, they are making a living world for it together…
